Summer Global Health Fellowship applications open

Up to seven students can conduct research overseas this summer through the new UNMC College of Public Health Summer Global Health Fellowship Program.

The 10-week fellowships, provided through the office of Dean Ali S. Khan, M.D., M.P.H., are open to all UNMC students, with preferences given to public health students, faculty-led proposals and projects. Multidisciplinary applications where public health students work with other UNMC students will receive special consideration, but is not a requirement.

Each project will receive between $4,000 and $7,000 to support the cost of international travel, visa fees, air ambulance, on-site room and board, local travel and other research-related expenses for the student, said Pinaki Panigrahi, M.D., director, Center for Global Health and Development, College of Public Health.

Students are expected to spend four to six weeks from June to mid-August at the global site and the rest of the time in preparation and post-research data analysis.

At the end of the program, students are required to submit a written report of their work and make an oral presentation at UNMC in fall 2015. MPH students can use the work for a Service Learning/Capstone project if required criteria are met. Finally, all recipients will be required to submit one manuscript for publication using the results of their summer fellowship.

The fellowships are made possible by an anonymous donation made to the college, Dr. Panigrahi said.

A UNMC faculty mentor and a local overseas expert mentor are required. Types of projects can range from surveillance or evaluation to field, hospital, laboratory or community-based research. If human subject research is proposed, there should be concrete plans to obtain required IRB and other approvals (if any) from UNMC and the host country.

Use this document to prepare the application. Contact Dr. Panigrahi at the Center for Global Health and Development for additional information. Deadline for submission is midnight April 16. Winners will be declared by the end of April.
