Speaker explores war on infectious diseases

Jon Mirsalis, Ph.D., will speak at noon today on “A New Paradigm for Engaging the War on Infectious Diseases” in the Durham Research Center Auditorium, Room 1002.

Dr. Mirsalis, managing director of the biosciences division and executive director of translational development at SRI International in Menlo Park, Calif., manages two programs for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for the development of promising therapeutics for the prevention and treatment of a range of diseases, including TB, malaria, influenza, polio, anthrax, plague and Ebola.

He will discuss the growing need for ID vaccines and therapeutics, present new models for discovering and developing them, and provide examples of public-private partnerships that have advanced therapeutics for specific infectious diseases.

The discussion will be presented by the office of the vice chancellor for research.
