Rev. Darryl Eure will deliver the annual keynote address to honor slain civil rights leader, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., on the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus on Monday, Jan. 19.
As one of the city’s best attended events on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the program, which starts at noon, is free and open to the public. Rev. Eure’s speech is sponsored by UNMC and Nebraska Medicine and will be in the lower level of the Storz Pavilion in Clarkson Tower.
Keyboardist Nate Assad and drummer Billy Foeman Quartey will perform at the beginning and end of the program and local spoken word artist, Felicia Webster, (also known as Withlove, Felicia) will perform a selection of her poetry. Webster, who is co-host of Verbal Gumbo, is a teaching artist, author, and known for her moving and dramatic presentations.
Rev. Eure, who will perform a portion of several of Dr. King’s speeches, is pastor at the Freestone Baptist Church, a position he has held for more than 28 years. He is a lifetime community activist in civil and human rights in Nebraska.
In 1968 Rev. Eure, his mother, Dorothy and brother, Harry, co-founded Nebraska’s first black dramatic theater, the Afro-Academy of Dramatic Arts. Rev. Eure is an actor and writer of several plays produced and presented throughout Nebraska. He has performed many portrayals of Rev. Dr. King and Malcolm X.
Lunch will be provided to the first 300 people in attendance.
Public parking is available in Lot 63, which is located at the corner of 39th and Marcy streets, one block south of Leavenworth St. From there a shuttle will transport attendees to Clarkson Tower. The shuttles will run prior to the event from 11:30 a.m. to noon and after from 1 to 1:30 p.m.
