Ice rink to open Nov. 28

UNMC will open the ice skating rink on Nov. 28, and it will remain in operation through Jan. 31.

The rink is located on the east side of 42nd Street, between the College of Nursing Building and the Sorrell Center. It features concessions, music and decorations.

This year, UNMC employees and their families can skate for free, as well as the employees and dependents of Nebraska Medicine, Clarkson College and Ronald McDonald House employees and house guests. Employees must be present and have a valid ID card for dependents to skate. Skate rental is free.

For all others, the fee is $7, which includes skates.

Operating hours during the winter season will be:

  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Friday.
  • Noon to 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.

This year, the Ronald McDonald Benefit Skate, “Freezin’ for a Reason,” will take place Dec. 6, with the Skate-a-thon for Parkinson’s set for Jan. 23 and 24. (More details on these fundraising events will be forthcoming).

The rink will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. It also is closed on Monday nights for the UNMC student broomball league tournaments.

Campus groups will again have the opportunity to rent the UNMC ice rink for private events this skating season.

Groups with 50 people or more affiliated with UNMC, Nebraska Medicine, and the Ronald McDonald House can reserve the rink for $50, Tuesdays through Fridays between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. or 4 and 8 p.m. No group rentals will be available on Mondays and weekends.

The deadline to reserve the rink is Jan. 16.

The ice rink will be closed if the wind-chill is 0 degrees or below, based on The Weather Channel. In the event of extreme snow, please call in advance to make sure the rink is open. Notice of the ice rink closing for private events or due to inclement weather can be found on the ice rink’s Facebook page, The Ice at the UNMC.
