Sexperts to present special all ages edition of Science Cafe Oct. 7

Relationships, dating, safer sex, and other topics will be presented at a special edition of the Omaha Science Café series, taking place on Oct. 7 at Caffeine Dreams, 4524 Farnam St.

The presentation begins at 7 p.m. and is open to all ages.

“We’ve gotten a lot of interest in other presentations on this topic from folks too young to go to the Slowdown, where you have to be 21 or older to attend,” said Kacie Gerard, science outreach programs coordinator for the University of Nebraska Medical Center. “So we decided to hold a special edition of Science Café featuring the Sexperts at a coffee house so anyone who wanted could attend.”

Members of the Midlands Sexual Health Research Collaborative will present. They include:

Christopher Fisher, Ph.D., director of the MSHRC; Sofia Jawed-Wessel, Ph.D., assistant director; and associate directors Jay Irwin, Ph.D., and Jason Coleman, Ph.D.

“It is important to generate discussion with our young people on the topics of relationships, dating and sex and provide relevant, accurate information because they are already talking about it,” Dr. Fisher said.

Science Cafés involve a face-to-face conversation with a scientist about current science topics. They are open to everyone (21 and older), and take place in casual settings like pubs and coffeehouses. Each meeting is organized around an interesting topic of conversation. A scientist gives a brief presentation followed by a question and answer period.
