The events support the goal of the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action to promote the importance of increasing and sustaining the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding.
“Because of the short- and long-term health benefits to both mother and baby, the American Academy of Pediatrics now considers breastfeeding no longer just a lifestyle choice but a public health issue,” said Lara Anderson, Olson Center lactation consultant.
Today’s events, taking place on the fourth floor of the Durham Outpatient Center, include:
- 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Exhibits featuring baby-wearing (the practice of a mother transporting her baby in a wearable carrier), nursing bras and fitting, breastfeeding accessories, breast pumps and supplies, lactation counseling, yoga, pregnancy/delivery education and milk bank donation.
- 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Free chair massages and pregnancy and infant wellness information.
- Noon-1 p.m.: Olson Center lactation consultants will speak on “Skin to Skin and the Sacred Hour.” The lecture will discuss the importance of the first hour after birth.
