The third annual art exhibit for Finding a Voice will open at the Kent Bellows Studio & Center for Visual Arts, 3303 Leavenworth St., from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on June 28. The exhibit is open to the public with a suggested donation.
Artwork, poetry, music and reflections by homeless guests and artists in recovery will be featured. Art and music will be available for purchase.
The exhibition is sponsored by Finding a Voice, UNMC’s College of Public Health Service Learning Academy project, in partnership with the Siena/Francis House homeless shelter and Metropolitan Community College Corps. Finding a Voice works to identify, understand and address the unmet needs of Omaha’s homeless population through the arts.
UNMC students and community members engage with homeless guests and addicts in recovery at the shelter to build self-worth, promote wellness and form a safe learning community where all can be treated with dignity and respect.
Three projects occur at the shelter each week: the Creative Workshop and wellness education, Artist in Recovery, and The Turtle Project, which is geared toward children and moms.
