Julie Vose, M.D., chief of UNMC's hematology/ oncology division, and Karen Linder, creator of the Karen Linder Distinguished Professorship for Women's Health in the School of Allied Health Professions, will be recognized on June 10 by the Women's Center for Advancement as part of their 27th annual Tribute to Women. The event "honors exceptional women in the Omaha community who have worked, through action and deed to help women and their children stay safe and grow strong," according to the WCA. Ira Combs, community liaison nurse coordinator for the Center for Reducing Health Disparities at UNMC's College of Public Health, has been selected as a recipient of the 2014 African American Leadership Award by the Urban League of Nebraska. Combs is being honored in the health category for his tireless work in the north Omaha community. Last year Combs received the White House "Champion of Change Award" and the Martin Luther King Award from Life Care Center of Omaha for his work in health prevention and education. The awards ceremony will be held Friday, June 6 at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Omaha.
Monty Sellon, M.D., received the Marion D. and Theodore H. Koefoot, Jr., M.D., Outstanding Preceptor in Rural Family Medicine Award last month. Dr. Sellon is a UNMC volunteer faculty member and a family physician in Fremont at 23rd Family Medical. Michael Sitorius, M.D., chairman of the UNMC Department of Family Medicine, presented the award, which recognizes outstanding teaching and mentoring by a UNMC Family Medicine Volunteer Community Preceptor.
More than 150 undergraduate and graduate nursing students at UNMC and College of St. Mary were chosen for induction into Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Nursing Honor Society, Gamma Pi At-Large Chapter. The Gamma Pi At-Large Chapter includes six campuses — five UNMC nursing divisions in Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney, Scottsbluff and Norfolk and the College of St. Mary. STTI supports the learning, knowledge and professional development of nurse leaders and scholars committed to making a difference in health worldwide. Founded in 1922, it is the only nursing honor society. STTI is a global community of nurse leaders and scholars with 490 chapters in 85 countries around the world. CityMatCH has created the Detroit Institute for Equity Birth Outcomes. The project is aimed at reducing infant mortality in Detroit, where more babies die before their first birthday than in any other large U.S. city. CityMatCH is headquartered at UNMC and is part of the department of pediatrics. It is a freestanding national membership organization of city and county health departments' maternal and child health (MCH) programs and leaders representing urban communities in the U.S.
