Free health screenings available to the public
The University of Nebraska Medical Center Student Senate and other student volunteers will present a Health Screening Fair at the Juan Diego Center, 5211 S. 31st St., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday. The fair, which is free and open to the public, will feature:
· Lead testing;
· Sports safety and education;
· Presentations on dancing as exercise;
· Foot sensitivity test (for diabetics);
· Glucose test;
· Body mass index;
· Blood pressure screening;
· STD/HIV education;
· Medication interaction screening; and
· Smoking cessation demonstration.
This marks the third consecutive year that UNMC students have held the health fair in South Omaha, said Kathryn Istas, a student in the UNMC College of Public Health and one of the coordinators of the event.
Istas said about 50 UNMC students from six different colleges and units will participate in the health fair. They represent the colleges of medicine, nursing, pharmacy and public health, graduate studies and the School of Allied Health Professions.
