109 UNMC senior medical students receive residency assignments

A total of 109 senior medical students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha received their residency assignments today during a Match Day ceremony held on campus. A residency is a training program for newly-graduated medical students in the medical area of their choice. Residencies range in length from three to six years.

Thirty-five percent of UNMC students are staying in Nebraska for their training.

Nationally, this year’s Match Day is the largest in history, according to the National Resident Matching Program (NMRP). In addition, for the second year in a row, more U.S. medical school seniors will train as family medicine residents. This year, there was an 11 percent increase over last year. At UNMC, 18 percent of students matched in family medicine — a slight increase from last year.

Students are matched through a computer program to align their preferences for residency programs in order to fill the thousands of training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals. The NRMP is a private, not-for-profit organization established in 1952 to provide an orderly and fair mechanism to match the preferences of applicants to U.S. residency positions.

The UNMC students, slated to graduate May 7, are listed by hometown, name, specialty and residency assignment.
