UNMC starts residency program in radiation oncology

New program kicks off in July; will be one of about 70 such programs in the country.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center has launched a new radiation oncology residency program.

The four-year program, which will be directed by Ken Zhen, M.D., professor of radiation oncology, officially kicks off in July when the first resident begins training at UNMC.

"It has been our goal to make this department a true creditable academic program that is not only to provide the cutting edge high quality patient care, but also to excel in research and education," Dr. Zhen said. "An accredited residency program will give us a national recognition and privilege to educate and train the professionals to become future radiation oncologists."

The program has received full accreditation from the American Councils for Graduate Medical Education and can facilitate up to four residents at any given time.

It will be one of about 70 radiation-oncology programs in the country.

"It took us a long time to build the ground work to this point," Dr. Zhen said. "Being given full accreditation as a new program speaks for the high quality of this program and hard work by the faculty members and staff of this department at UNMC."

As the state’s only academic health science center, UNMC is on the leading edge of health care. Breakthroughs are possible because hard-working researchers, educators and clinicians are resolved to work together to fuel discovery. UNMC’s extramural research support now exceeds $100 million, resulting in the creation of 3,600 jobs in Nebraska. UNMC’s academic excellence is shown through its award-winning programs, and its educational programs are responsible for training more health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other institution. Through its commitment to education, research, patient care and outreach, UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, have established themselves as one of the country’s leading health care centers. UNMC’s physician practice group, UNMC Physicians, includes 550 physicians in 50 specialties and subspecialties who practice primarily in The Nebraska Medical Center.
