119 UNMC senior medical students receive residency assignments

A total of 119 senior medical students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha received their residency assignments today during the traditional Match Day ceremony held in the Sorrell Center on the UNMC campus.

A residency is a training program for newly-graduated medical students in the medical area of their choice. Residencies range in length from three to six years.

Of the UNMC students who matched, 45 percent are staying in Nebraska for their training programs and 39 percent will do residencies at The Nebraska Medical Center, UNMC’s hospital partner.

This year’s Match Day is the largest in history, according to the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), as 30,543 applicants participated — 655 more than last year.

A computer program is used to align the preferences of applicants with the preferences of residency programs in order to fill the thousands of training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals. The NRMP is a private, not-for-profit organization established in 1952 to provide an orderly and fair mechanism to match the preferences of applicants to U.S. residency positions.

As the state’s only academic health science center, UNMC is on the leading edge of health care. Breakthroughs are possible because hard-working researchers, educators and clinicians are resolved to work together to fuel discovery. In 2009, UNMC’s extramural research support topped $100 million for the first time, resulting in the creation of 3,600 jobs in Nebraska. UNMC’s academic excellence is shown through its award-winning programs, and its educational programs are responsible for training more health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other institution. Through its commitment to education, research, patient care and outreach, UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, have established themselves as one of the country’s leading health care centers. UNMC’s physician practice group, UNMC Physicians, includes 550 physicians in 50 specialties and subspecialties who practice primarily in The Nebraska Medical Center.
