Prospective college students and advisers are invited to the University of Nebraska Medical Center on Saturday, March 27, to get an insider’s view of the career options within the School of Allied Health Professions (SAHP).
Pre-registration by March 20 is required for the SAHP’s free Backstage Pass event, which runs from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education, 619 S. 42nd St., Omaha. Parking is available in Lot 4 on the southeast corner of 42nd and Emile streets.
“The health care landscape would change dramatically without the skills and expertise of allied health professionals,” said Kyle Meyer, Ph.D., associate dean of the SAHP. “There is a great demand for allied health professionals as virtually all fields face a staffing shortage. Backstage Pass will enable prospective students to talk with current students, as well as faculty, and learn first-hand about the various allied health careers.”
Allied health professionals – which include radiographers, physician assistants and sonographers to name a few – make up approximately 60 percent of the entire health care workforce.
The afternoon will include informational sessions on admissions, student life, scholarships and financial aid. Students also will have the opportunity to talk with current students and tour SAHP’s 11 programs:
Clinical Laboratory Science
Clinical Perfusion
CT/MRI
Cytotechnology
Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Medical Nutrition
Nuclear Medicine
Physical Therapy
Physician Assistant
Radiation Therapy
Radiography

As the state’s only academic health science center, UNMC is on the leading edge of health care. Breakthroughs are possible because hard-working researchers, educators and clinicians are resolved to work together to fuel discovery. In 2009, UNMC’s extramural research support topped $100 million for the first time, resulting in the creation of 3,600 jobs in Nebraska. UNMC’s academic excellence is shown through its award-winning programs, and its educational programs are responsible for training more health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other institution. Through its commitment to education, research, patient care and outreach, UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, have established themselves as one of the country’s leading health care centers. UNMC’s physician practice group, UNMC Physicians, includes 550 physicians in 50 specialties and subspecialties who practice primarily in The Nebraska Medical Center.
