Deadline June 30 looms for those interested in Accelerated Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing program in Scottsbluff

The application deadline of June 30 for those interested in applying for the Accelerated Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing program in Scottsbluff is looming.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing West Nebraska Division in Scottsbluff, with support from Regional West Medical Center, will launch the program in January with a class of 10 students.

Accelerated bachelor’s degree programs are intense programs that require students who already have a bachelor’s degree in another field, to take nursing classes for essentially one year — two semesters, as well as during the summer, without breaks.

Clinical rotations also may be held on evenings and weekends.

Though the program is very intense, Sue Wilhelm, Ph.D., interim assistant dean of the UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division, said a lot of support is available to students. “Our small classroom environment of student-to-faculty ratio is an advantage. Our faculty are committed to student success and are good about getting students the help they need to be successful.”

Kate Steinbock, student services coordinator, UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division, said it’s nice to have the program available in Scottsbluff.

“Our applicants look at nursing as an attractive career. Some don’t have jobs and see a career in nursing as a way they can stay in the Panhandle. Being able to get a bachelor’s degree in nursing in just one year is what a lot of them are interested in,” Steinbock said.
