Nineteen 11th- and 12th-graders from throughout Nebraska participated Aug. 4-7 in the Summer Health Professions Career Workshop at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
“It is always a pleasure having the Summer Health Professions Career Workshop students on campus,” said Lisa Jewell, director of the UNMC Youth Learning Center. “We had a wonderful group of students this year. They came in each morning ready and excited to learn new things.”
Students participated in several hands-on activities during the workshop, highlights included: tying basic surgical knots, identifying organisms growing in pond water, distinguishing heart and breath sounds on an instructional mannequin, observing how the blood donation process works, and exploring what a patient experiences in the Hyperbaric Chamber.
At the end of the workshop, students were required to research a health career-related topic and then compose a short paper. Students presented their findings to their peers and UNMC staff on the final day of the program.
“Researching and writing these papers gives the students an opportunity to self-reflect, review what they learned, discover what areas of health sciences or health careers they might be interested in, and ultimately, assists them as they plan for their future,” Jewell said.
UNMC nursing students Joy Chapman and LeeAnn Vontz chaperoned the students during the week of the workshop.
