Salem Baptist Church is the host location for the 2001 Family Health
Fair. The fair is sponsored by a collaboration of physicians, nurses, medical
students, human service agencies and community organizations, as well as
the Salem Baptist Church health ministry. The health fair is Saturday,
April 7, from 8:00 a.m. to noon, at the Salem Baptist Church, 3131 Lake
Street.
The fair will feature free screenings for prostate cancer, diabetes,
blood pressure, HIV, glaucoma, colorectal cancer, and lead blood level
screening for children and more. There will be special activities
for children coordinated by health professions students from Creighton
University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, many representing
local chapters of the Student National Medical Association.
There will be free presentations that include:
· 8:00 a.m. Your Doctors Appointment how to ask questions
and get the most out of your doctor visits. A physician will explain the
kinds of questions patients and advocates should be asking in order to
gain the most knowledge during the often short amount of time allowed per
patient visit.
· 8:30 a.m. Coronary Artery Disease: Are You at Risk?
· 10:00 a.m. Your Doctors Appointment a registered nurse
will discuss the way in which patients can get the most out of their office
visits with health professionals.
· 11:00 a.m. — Stroke Risks
In addition, the Family Health Fair will feature free personal screenings
that will include:
· 8:00 10:00 a.m. Skin Health Assessments a clinical
dermatologist will offer health tips for general skin care and advisements
of any potential skin issues.
· 10:00 11:00 a.m. — A Ladies Touch Breast cancer
awareness training and discussion of critical issues accounting for high
mortality rates of African-American women from breast cancer.
· 11:00 noon Foot Care Screenings Health tips
for general foot care, nail care, skin protection and how to use feet as
early warning sign of possible health issues.
The 2001 Family Health Fair is free and open to the public. For
