New UNMC Chancellor to Visit 5 West, Central Nebraska Communities

Newly-appointed chancellor of the University of Nebraska Medical Center,

Harold M. Maurer, M.D., is scheduled to visit five Nebraska communities

Jan. 27 and 28, to meet with community health care leaders and talk about

UNMC and its future.

Dr. Maurer will visit Lexington, North Platte, Scottsbluff, Chadron

and McCook. He is scheduled to visit six more communities in February.

Dr. Maurer began his appointment as chancellor on Dec. 1, 1998. Since

1993, he had served as dean of the UNMC College of Medicine. Dr. Maurer

replaced William O. Berndt, Ph.D., as chancellor. Dr. Berndt had served

as chancellor since 1996 and had served as interim chancellor from 1991-92.

Dr. Maurer holds academic appointments in the department of pediatrics

and in the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases

at UNMC.

From 1968 to 1993, Dr. Maurer was on the faculty of the Children Medical

Center at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, serving as the Jessie

Ball duPont Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics during

his last nine years there. Prior to this, he served two years as chief

of pediatrics for the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in Norfolk, Va.,

and did a two-year fellowship in pediatric cancer at Babies Hospital at

Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York.

A native of New York City, Dr. Maurer earned his bachelors degree from

New York University and his medical degree from the State University of

New York Downstate Medical Center at Brooklyn. He serves on the board of

directors of Nebraska Health System and chairs the UNMC Faculty Council.

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the state.

Through its commitment to research, education and patient care, UNMC has

established itself as one of the country’s leading centers for cancer research

and treatment and solid organ transplantation. More than $34 million in

research grants and contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually.

In addition, UNMC’s educational programs are responsible for training more

health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other institution.
