University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry faculty member,
Larry D. Haisch, D.D.S., recently was one of two faculty advisors nationally
to receive the 2001 Burton C. Borgelt/International Association of Student
Clinicians-American Dental Association Faculty Advisor Award.
The award, presented annually by the International Association of Student
Clinicians-American Dental Association (SCADA), is given to faculty advisors
who have distinguished themselves in service to their schools student
clinician program. SCADA is the alumni association of Student Clinicians.
Membership is composed of former student clinicians and program faculty
advisors.
Haisch received the award earlier this month at the 78th Annual Session
of the American Dental Education Association in Chicago. He has been the
SCADA faculty advisor for the Student Clinician Program at the College
of Dentistry for 16 years.
Each year, Dr. Haisch works with students from the program who compete
nationally at the annual session of the American Dental Association.
Haisch has been involved with the college¹s annual Student Scientific
Program since he joined the faculty in 1979. As a new faculty member, he
became a member of the Student Scientific Program Committee and later chaired
the committee. He also wrote a course proposal that ultimately made the
program a required part of the dentistry curriculum.
The Board of Governors was most impressed with Dr. Haisch’s commitment
and experience he has brought to his position, said George Rhodes, corresponding
secretary and editor, SCADA.
Rhodes said the award is named in honor of Burton C. Borgelt, DENTSPLYs
former chairman and chief executive officer, who enthusiastically supported
sponsorship of these programs during his 14-year tenure at the helm of
the company’s leadership. DENTSPLY designs, develops, manufactures and
markets dental products.
This was a total surprise, Dr. Haisch said about the award. The success
of our program is based on the efforts of a lot of people. Credit also
should go to our students, faculty who act as mentors for the students
individual projects as well as the Learning Resources Department, which
provides technical support, and our administration. I am pleased
to receive the award, but like anything, it is not a one-person deal.
A native of Laurel, Neb., Dr. Haisch is a 1967 graduate of the UNMC
College of Dentistry and a member of the College of Dentistry Alumni Association
board of directors. He is vice chair of the College of Dentistrys Department
of Adult Restorative Dentistry.
