Mall walkers put themselves through the paces in the interest
of health. Now, there is another mall attraction designed to help
people stay healthy, courtesy of the University of Nebraska
Medical Center.
The UNMC Eppley Cancer Center has installed an interactive,
touch-screen kiosk at the Oak View Mall, 3001 S. 144th St., to
bring cancer-related information to the public in a easy-to-use
format.
"The kiosk’s most important purpose is outreach and
education to the public," said Margaret Tempero, M.D.,
interim director of the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center. "By
placing this information module in a very public area, we will be
able to provide ready and easy access to the public for cancer
information that will range from cancer prevention and detection
to the availability of treatment options for advanced
cancer."
The kiosk is located on the mall’s lower level, near the
entrance to Younkers. The opening screen gives users the
opportunity to select information from the following four
categories:
-
- "Change Your World" offers information
on lifestyle management issues such as nutrition,
skin care, tobacco control, fitness and exercise,
stress management, environmental exposure, and
cancer prevention and detection. It also contains
information on classes and forums at UNMC, cancer
support groups, special events, the
"LifeQuest" television schedule and
self-test quizzes.
- "Change Your World" offers information
-
- "World Class Cancer Care" offers
information on The Lied Transplant Center, under
construction at UNMC, types of cancer, cancer
treatment options — including traditional, new
and emerging therapies, and an in-depth cancer
prevention and detection segment.
- "World Class Cancer Research" offers an
overview of the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center’s
basic research and clinical research efforts.
- "Meet Our Professionals" offers
information on the center’s cancer care team
and a directory of all UNMC physicians.
- "World Class Cancer Care" offers
The kiosk also contains a phone line and receiver, which
automatically connects users to Cancer HELPLINKĀ®, a toll-free
phone service that provides answers to cancer questions. If users
want more information on a topic, they can type their request on
a keyboard that pops up on screen.
UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the
state. Through its commitment to research, education and patient
care, UNMC has established itself as one of the country’s leading
centers for cancer research and treatment and solid organ
transplantation. In addition, UNMC’s educational programs are
responsible for training more health professionals practicing in
Nebraska than any other institution.
