Two faculty members at the University of Nebraska Medical Center recently
were named to new positions.
Gerald Groggel, M.D., associate professor in the UNMC Department of
Internal Medicine, has been named section chief of nephrology. Nephrology
focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of the kidney. Michael Hammeke,
M.D., an associate professor in the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine,
has been named medical director of the Nebraska Health System dialysis
program.
As section chief, Dr. Groggel intends to build UNMC’s research program
in nephrology. Currently, there are four faculty members in the section.
“I’m excited about building the nephrology section that Dr. Hammeke
started six years ago,” said Dr. Groggel, who joined UNMC in 1995. “I want
our nephrology division to continue to provide outstanding care to patients
both in Omaha and all of Nebraska. We should be on the cutting edge of
nephrology care and be viewed as a place which can solve problems which
others may not be able to solve.”
Dr. Groggel replaces Dr. Hammeke, who has served as section chief since
1994.
Dr. Hammeke joined UNMC in 1994 after a 17-year career at Creighton
University. Under his direction, nephrology became the elective of choice
for UNMC’s medical students and residents. As medical director of the dialysis
program, Dr. Hammeke will supervise acute and chronic dialysis service
for Nebraska Health System.
