The University of Nebraska Medical Centers Eppley Cancer Center has
received $133,000 in proceeds from the 2001 Cattlemens Ball of Nebraska,
an event which was held June 2 at the Thacher Cattle Company near Valentine,
Neb.
The funds from the Nebraska Cattlemens Ball Association are very important
in our quest for information, said Kenneth Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., director
of the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center. The money allows us to launch new, groundbreaking
research projects, improve treatment options and search for new methods
of cancer prevention. We truly appreciate the associations support in
our fight against cancer.
The Cattlemens Ball is held annually to promote beef in a healthy diet
and to showcase rural Nebraska. All of the money raised stays in Nebraska,
with 90 percent of the proceeds going to the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center
and 10 percent directed toward health-care needs in the community hosting
the event. Cherry County Hospital, Wood Lake Fire Department, Brownlee
Emergency Medical Technicians, Cody-Merriman Emergency Medical Technicians
and Cherry County Emergency Medical Services Oximeter are among the local
recipients this year.
The 2001 Cattlemens Ball at the Thacher Cattle Company was hosted by
Don and Sandi Ormesher, their son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Kami Ormesher,
and Mark and Kamis four children. Event activities included an art
show, live auction, cowboy poetry, horse shows and a performance by Riders
in the Sky, a Grammy-award winning musical comedy group. Staff members
from the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center as well as nurses from Nebraska Health
System and the UNMC College of Nursing also provided free screenings for
prostate and skin cancer.
