University of Iowa dentist to discuss impact of ACA on dentistry

Peter Damiano, D.D.S., director of the Public Policy Center and professor of preventive and community dentistry at the University of Iowa, will give the Richard E. Bradley Memorial Lecture at 1:30 p.m. on April 4 in the Great Plains Room – East Campus Union at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The lecture is part of the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry’s 28th annual Professionals Day program.

Dr. Damiano will discuss the Affordable Care Act and the implications for dentistry and dental education. He is a health services researcher studying access to and quality of primary care services, including dental care. He is conducting funded studies are in the areas of health care reform, maternal and child health, health disparities and health care for underserved populations.

A prolific researcher, Dr. Damiano has had more than 100 articles published in scientific journals and has been principal investigator on more than 50 funded research studies. He staffed the Iowa State Health Care Reform Commission and led an interim session on health care integration this past fall. He continues to be clinically active, providing dental services to patients in the University of Iowa’s Faculty Group Practice.

Professionals Day celebrates scholarly activities and provides students, faculty and the dental community an opportunity to share professional and academic activities. The scientific program highlights the academic achievements of dental students and their research on topics concerning oral health.

The Richard E. Bradley Memorial Lecture honors Dr. Bradley, who served on the faculty of the UNMC College of Dentistry from 1959-1980, including 12 years as dean of the college. After his retirement, Dr. Bradley lived in Lincoln. He died in 2012 at the age of 86.
