The University of Nebraska Medical Center debuted the first stages of its redesigned website today. Along with a modern, simplified look, the design of www.unmc.edu will adjust automatically for optimum viewing across devices, from desktop computers to smartphones.
The nearly two-year project will continue until the end of this year. Last year, UNMC’s expansive, 15,000-page website had 3.57 million visits.
The first and most visible change is the front page.
“The new design is more modern and fresh, using color in a subtle, strategic way,” said Stacie Hamel, associate director for web and interactive media in the UNMC public relations department. “We are especially excited to move to a responsive design, meaning the site will adjust automatically to mobile devices. That’s important for the growing number of our students and other visitors who access our website on smartphones and tablets.”
Hamel said the website better reflects the excellence in education, research and patient care taking place at UNMC.
“For the public, our site offers information about medical outreach, public events, a free health information search service through our library, as well as opportunities to be part of clinical trials and news about research breakthroughs,” Hamel said.
The site serves a range of visitors, from those who might be discovering UNMC for the first time to faculty and staff who use the site regularly to access specific information.
Cascade Server is employed on the website as the content management system, chosen for its flexibility and ease of use. More than 100 UNMC staff members help keep the site updated.
The web teams from UNMC public relations and information technology services have worked for nearly two years on the redesign and content management system projects, with input from a campus-wide advisory group.
In addition to www.unmc.edu, the website features links to UNMC’s clinical partners, The Nebraska Medical Center and UNMC Physicians, for those who might be seeking to make appointments with health care providers or looking for other health information.
