The College of Medicine is considering implementing a chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. This society is dedicated to recognize, support and promote the values of humanism and professionalism in medicine. Faculty, students, and residents would be honored for their humanistic qualities. Interested faculty should email Gerald Moore, M.D.

Rachel Bonnema, M.D., internal medicine-general internal medicine, was a contributor to a toolkit through the Association of American Medical Colleges to provide practical guidance to women faculty in academic medicine.

Cyrus Desouza, M.B.B.S., internal medicine – diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism, was awarded the first Ervin and Dorothy Schulz Medical Professorship for Diabetes Research.

Todd Wyatt, Ph.D., internal medicine-pulmonary, received the 2013 President's Award from the Florida Education Fund in Tampa for his work with underrepresented minority students training in science as part of the McKnight Fellows Program.

Tara Nordgren, Ph.D., internal medicine-pulmonary, received the 2013 Pathway to Independence Award as UNMC's most promising postdoctoral student.

Jill Poole, M.D., associate professor, pulmonary, critical care, sleep and allergy division, was chosen to deliver the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology's (AAAAI) John E. Salvaggio Memorial Lectureship. Dr. Poole will present at a plenary session March 14 at the annual AAAAI meeting in San Diego. She will be recognized for her outstanding service to the specialty and science of allergy and immunology.

John Schleicher, head of special collections in the McGoogan Library of Medicine, has been elected to the board of directors for Humanities Nebraska. Established as a state-based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1973, Humanities Nebraska inspires and enriches personal and public life by offering opportunities to thoughtfully engage with history and culture. Over the past four decades, its programming has evolved and expanded to include a number of programs held across the state. In his role at UNMC, Schleicher is in charge of rare books, archival material, artifacts, and artwork, related to the history of medicine and the other health professions. He is also an adjunct lecturer in history at UNO.

AnneMarie DeVoll-Zabrocki, a pediatric nurse practitioner for the solid organ transplant team at UNMC, is the 2014 recipient of the Advanced Transplant Provider Award from the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. DeVoll-Zabrocki, who has been at UNMC since 2004, received the award at the 2014 ASTS Winter Symposium, held in Miami Beach, Fla. The award is given annually to advanced transplant professionals (ATP) who have demonstrated exemplary service to transplant patients and fellow transplant health professionals. The award recognizes the time and effort dedicated to advancing clinical practice through translation of scientific information, development of standards and clinical mentoring. The American Society of Transplant Surgeons is composed of about 2,000 transplant surgeons, physicians, scientists, advanced transplant providers and allied health professionals dedicated to excellence in transplantation surgery through education and research with respect to all aspects of organ donation and transplantation.

Howard Gendelman, M.D., chair of pharmacology and experimental neuroscience, and Huangui Xiong, M.D., professor of pharmacology and experimental neuroscience, are co-editors of "Current Laboratory Methods in Neuroscience Research," recently published by Springer Protocol Handbooks. The book is described on the publisher's website as a "research manual for both students and seasoned researchers. It focuses on commonly-used techniques employed in neuroscience research, presented in a simple, step-by-step manner for laboratory use."

Irving Zucker, Ph.D., chairman of cellular and integrative physiology, donned a red dress to celebrate his department's fund-raising success for the American Heart Association. The department raised $655, so Dr. Zucker proudly showed up at work in the outfit and also wore the outfit to the evening run, which, with 570 dashers, was the largest Red Dress event in the United States.
