The office of the vice chancellor for research has announced that as of Jan. 12, the NIH salary cap increased to $181,500. The cap represents the maximum amount of NIH grant funds that can pay for faculty salary.
As a result, per UNMC policy:
- Institutional base salary is capped at the current published NIH salary limitation level only for grant and contract proposals sponsored by the NIH, or by those sponsors that utilize the NIH salary cap.
- For all other proposals, the total institutional base salary is used.
The new salary cap represents a 1 percent increase from the previous cap of $179,700.
The NIH policy is often used by other agencies or foundations when they set award restrictions, so changes in the NIH salary cap can have far-reaching consequences.
UNMC’s standard practice for grant and contract budget preparation is to apply a 3 to 4 percent salary increase for future years, which accommodates this salary cap adjustment. Although the NIH is not currently funding these increases, their inclusion is allowable to account for potential changes in future years.
