Library announces subscription changes for 2014

About the process

Each year, the McGoogan Library of Medicine assesses its resources, giving some “the boot” while ushering in new, highly sought titles.

Many factors go into the subscription decisions, the first of which are requests from library users. Library staff listens to feedback; in fact, this is what keeps staff informed about what patrons need.

As rapidly as research and practice in the health sciences evolve, the library’s resource offerings need to be flexible to keep pace. At the same time, the library staff take its responsibility as stewards of institutional holdings very seriously, balancing innovation with curation.

Please contact the library with suggestion for cancellations or additions to the holdings. Staff is always available through email or through chat, text, phone or online forms here.

The McGoogan Library of Medicine has announced its subscription changes for 2014.

Here are the changes, effective this month, with insight into the decision-making process:

Micromedex out, Lexicomp in.
UNMC’s Micromedex license was shared with The Nebraska Medical Center, so when the med center moved to Lexicomp, the library followed suit. It is important to train students on the resource that they will likely use in practice. The NEOFAX resource from Truven Health Analytics will remain accessible to UNMC users, but the rest of Micromedex will be gone.

AccessSurgery added to McGraw Hill Suite.
Joining AccessPharmacy and AccessMedicine, the library — per user requests — has added AccessSurgery. AccessSurgery offers textbooks, video, images, test prep, and more for the surgical student. Each textbook in AccessSurgery also is listed in the library’s catalog and Ebook A-Z list.

Dynamed cancelled.
Dynamed use was consistent but not extremely high. From November 2012 to November 2013, there were 9,100 sessions among UNMC users, putting cost per session at $2.60. The library, after seeking input from stakeholders, decided that the $23,000 subscription fee could be better used elsewhere.

Journal Additions.
Journal addition decisions are made through user request, a large amount of interlibrary loan requests or a high citation count from UNMC authors. The new journals for 2014 are:

  • JoVE: Bioengineering, Clinical and Translational, and Infection and Immunology
  • Clinical Medicine: Journal of the Royal College of Physicians
  • Journal of Intraprofessional Care
  • Journal of Neurotrauma
  • The Medical Teacher
  • Tobacco Control

Journal cancellations.
Journal cancellation decisions were based on citation data. If a journal had a high cost per use and was cited less than 25 times in the last 12 months by UNMC researchers, it was cancelled. These journals will still be available via Interlibrary Loan.

  • Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica
  • American Journal of Hypertension

Social Services/Sociological abstracts.
The library has added these databases to its holdings to fill a niche for searching the social sciences literature. These databases have been accessible in the past, but the library has now officially entered into a subscription for them.
