The UNMC ice rink will be open through Sunday, Jan. 19. It will close on Jan. 20.
The rink was originally set to close on Jan. 11, following the 24-hour UNMC Skate-a-thon for Parkinson’s.
The rink is located on the east side of 42nd Street, between the College of Nursing building and the Sorrell Center. It features concessions, music and decorations.
This year, UNMC employees and their families can skate for free, as well as the employees and dependents of The Nebraska Medical Center, UNMC Physicians, Clarkson College and Ronald McDonald House employees and houseguests. Employees must be present and have valid ID card for dependents to skate. Skate rental is free as well.
For all others, the fee is $7, which includes skates.
The rink is reserved Friday and Saturday for the UNMC Skate-a-thon for Parkinson’s — otherwise, normal hours will remain in place. They are:
- 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
- 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday.
- Noon to 10 p.m., Saturday.
- Noon to 8 p.m., Sunday.
My family made the 30 minute trip into Omaha on Saturday only to be disappointed. We waited between 2 and 2:30 to see if anyone was going to open up the ice skating rink before calling Security to find out that the Manager had decided to close it. We weren't the only ones there. There were 2 other families. It was a beautiful day and I know of 15 people that would have enjoyed ice skating but didn't get a chance. Why were the days extended if they weren't going to be honored?
