Finalist for College of Dentistry dean position on campus today

Janet Guthmiller, D.D.S., Ph.D., a finalist to become the dean of the UNMC College of Dentistry, will visit the Omaha campus today.

She will visit the College of Dentistry in Lincoln on Thursday.

Dr. Guthmiller is the associate dean of academic affairs and professor in the department of periodontology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry.

She earned her D.D.S. from the University of Iowa and completed a specialty program in periodontology and a Ph.D. in cellular and structural biology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.

Dr. Guthmiller is an accomplished researcher, author, and teacher. She has special interests in genetic studies of periodontal bacteria and the expression and activity of innate antimicrobial peptides, as well as in mentorship programs for students and faculty. She is the recipient of multiple collegiate and national recognitions for her many accomplishments.

Dr. Guthmiller has served on the faculty of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and has been the associate dean at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 2007.

One more finalist for the position will visit UNMC later this month.

Scott De Rossi, D.M.D., professor and chair, department of oral health and diagnostic sciences at Georgia Regents University College of Dental Medicine, will be at the College of Dentistry in Lincoln on Dec. 17, and on the Omaha campus on Dec. 18.

Finalist Charles Shuler, D.M.D., visited campus earlier this week.

There are no public presentations scheduled for the candidates’ visits.

John Reinhardt, D.D.S., who has served as dean of the UNMC College of Dentistry for 13 years, announced in June that he will step down from his post on June 30, 2014.
