In August, students at UNMC’s College of Nursing partnered with Embrace the Nations, a local non-profit organization, to host a community engagement celebration for new refugee families from Burma and Nepal who live in the area. The event featured children- and family-themed attractions, such as a bounce house, face and nail painting and balloon twisting, as well as health screenings that included blood pressure, vision and oral health.
Ira Combs, an oncology nurse whose emphasis now is public health, was selected by the White House as a Public Health and Prevention Champion of Change. Combs was honored at a White House reception last week and participated in a panel discussion describing his work. Video of the group presentation at the White House can be seen here.

Ron Attanasio, D.D.S., professor and director of the temporomandibular and orofacial pain section at the UNMC College of Dentistry, closed out the Lincoln Science Cafe fall season this week with a discussion on “Snoring and Sleep Apnea.” Dr. Attanasio, pictured at right with his family, drew 100 people to the event. Science Cafe events will resume in the spring.

Students, fellows and faculty from the UNMC Department of Cellular and Integrative Physiology participated in the annual conference of the Council for High Blood Pressure Research of the American Heart Association in New Orleans from Sept. 11 to 14. The conference, the leading scientific meeting related to basic, clinical and population science in the world, was combined with the International Society for Hypertension annual meeting. Several UNMC participants won significant awards for their research: Krupa Savalia, a M.D./Ph.D. student working in the laboratory of Matthew Zimmerman, Ph.D., won the Best Trainee Oral Presentation Award. Karla Vincent Haack, Ph.D., a post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of Irving Zucker, Ph.D., won the award for Best Trainee Poster. The International Society of Hypertension sponsored both awards. Hanjun Wang, M.D., won a New Investigator Award. A former UNMC graduate student, Liang Xiao, Ph.D., now a post-doctoral fellow at Vanderbilt University, won the award for Best Trainee Abstract. Also participating from UNMC were Erika Boesen, Ph.D., Pamela Carmines, Ph.D., Alicia Schiller and Urmi Basu.
