On June 7, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved changing the name of the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center to the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.

As a result, Ken Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., is now director of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, in addition to being director of the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases.

“We look forward to carrying on the Eppley Cancer Center tradition of excellence as we move into a new era with the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center,” Dr. Cowan said.

In addition to the Eppley Institute — an academic unit of UNMC with primary faculty appointments — the Eppley name will remain at UNMC on two renovated cancer buildings near Clarkson Tower: the Eppley Cancer Institute and the Eppley Science Hall.

It was 1993 when the Board of Regents approved the establishment of the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center as a matrix cancer research organization to help foster cancer research across academic units and campuses in the University of Nebraska. With the naming of the new cancer center — the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center — the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center name is unnecessary.
