Nancy Sloan, Pharm.D., of Scottsbluff, recently was honored as the Preceptor of the Year during the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Pharmacy 2013 Spring Honors Convocation and hooding ceremony.
Dr. Sloan is a 1980 graduate of UNMC. She's currently interim director of pharmacy and assistant director of clinical services at the Regional West Medical Center.
Preceptors teach and mentor students while students gain experiences in professional work settings. They also advance high standards of practice, promote professional values and nurture professional development of the student.
“Students are always great to have at our hospital," Dr. Sloan said. "They are a constant stimulus to keep learning. They are very helpful with projects, and they are my main 'tech resource' for staying current with 'clinical tools' on my iPod!
"Historically, we have recruited many students who are now clinical pharmacists at our hospital."
Fourth-year pharmacy students at UNMC nominated Dr. Sloan for the award.
Comments by the students included:
- “Her rotation made me actually think I could love hospital pharmacy.”
- “She was possibly the kindest person that I have ever met.” and
- “She has a way of instructing without making her students seem incompetent.”
Dr. Sloan precepts UNMC students and those from Creighton University, as well as the University of Wyoming, South University in Georgia, the University of Arizona and the University of South Dakota.
Dr. Sloan has participated in UNMC’s Rural Health Education Network activities. She's been licensed not only in Nebraska, but also in Iowa, Alabama, Texas and New York.
