It is a term of respect and good-natured humor that Michelle Parks, an administrative associate in the College of Pharmacy, earned over a decade as she rescued the recyclables from the clutches of the rubbish bins at her friends’ homes after their gatherings.
She even has a song she sings to get her friends to recycle, and there’s a dance, too.
It involves a jazz hands finish.
So, it’s not surprising to learn that when the College of Pharmacy got updated copiers and printers, Parks wanted to find a way to recycle the toner cartridges. The ones from the HP printers had been easy. Put the old cartridge in the new box and use the pre-paid UPS shipping label. But the Sharp brand didn’t seem to offer that option.
Parks refused to let the cartridges go out the door with the trash. She soon found out Sharp offers their customers a “zero waste to landfill” recycling option. Since she had several cartridges to recycle, she asked for three kits.
“Recycling kit” might be an understatement. Sharp encourages recycling of toner cartridges in bulk. The kit is a sizeable box that will hold multiple cartridges. Parks has started to fill her first box and looks forward to the first shipping opportunity.
If you or your department has a few Sharp cartridges to recycle, Parks welcomes you to stop by the College of Pharmacy Dean’s Office and add them to her kit. She might even teach you the recycle song!

I am so glad to hear about the Sharp recycling program. I am the recycling person on the 4th floor of the Sorrell Center, and it always pained me to put the toner cartridges in the trash. Thanks Michelle for doing this and making the campus aware of the program!
General Supply has been running a toner recycling program for years. Simply call 9-5220 and ask to have your larger toner cartridges picked up for recycling. The small ones can be sent to GSW in the campus mail.
Better Business Equipment picks up the used toner cartridges for recycling when they deliver the new one.
