Dele Davies, M.D., vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean of graduate studies, has been named to the board of governors for the Joslyn Art Museum.
Matt Zimmerman, Ph.D., cellular/integrative physiology, has been elected a member of the American Heart Association – Omaha board of directors. Over the past 5 years, the AHA has supported $4 million of heart disease research in Nebraska, including $2.6 million at UNMC.

Five UNMC faculty are taking fellowship training in the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine® (ELAM) Program for Women at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. The UNMC faculty include: Pamela Carmines, Ph.D., cellular/integrative physiology; Shelley Smith, Ph.D., Munroe-Meyer Institute; Jennifer Larsen, M.D., vice chancellor for research; Vimla Band, Ph.D., genetics, cell bology and anatomy; and Deborah Romberger, M.D., internal medicine – pulmonology. ELAM is the only program in the U.S. dedicated to preparing senior women faculty for positions of leadership at academic health centers, where they can ultimately play a role in academic health organizations becoming more inclusive of different perspectives and responsive to societal needs and expectations. ELAM also aims to increase the diversity of women in leadership positions.
Students and faculty of the SHARING Clinic recently presented at a conference, Best Run Practices in Student Run Free Clinics, in San Antonio, Texas. More than 300 students and faculty of student run free clinics attended, with representation from the United States, Canada and China. Presentations were made by the following UNMC students:
- Kari Echtenkamp and Laura Espejel on the benefits of using clinical laboratory science students to improve patient safety in student run free clinics;
- Katie Lydiatt on the educational value of the SHARING clinic;
- Chris Spencer, Erica Langnas and Brian Coburn on identifying health disparities and transportation barriers for SHARING clinic patients; and
- Ying Guo and Brian Coburn presented on the benefits of a continuity of care program for patients and students.
