A 2003 graduate of the UNMC College of Medicine, Natasha Burgert, M.D., was featured in the Oct. 8 edition of the New York Times. The story, Texting the Teenage Patient, detailed how physicians use social media to connect with their teenage patients. A pediatrician, Dr. Burgert resides in Kansas City, Mo., along with her husband, Kevin Burgert, M.D., who also is a 2003 graduate of the UNMC College of Medicine, and their two children. Dr. Natasha Burgert is the daughter of Don Mohlman, the HDR project manager for UNMC’s Cancer Center Campus.
Juliann Sebastian, Ph.D., dean of the UNMC College of Nursing, participated as a panelist on Oct. 3 as part of the “State of the Nursing Workforce” luncheon series hosted in collaboration with U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) and the Senate Nursing Caucus. The panelists discussed the present state of nursing education in America and how nursing schools prepare students to meet a growing demand for nursing services. Dr. Sebastian detailed how nursing education, including master’s and doctoral programs, are vital to ensuring high-quality, cost-effective health care for communities across the country.
Karen Weidner, director of the nursing program at Northeast Community College, and Liane Connelly, Ph.D., assistant dean of the UNMC College of Nursing Northern Division, recently presented at the Sigma Theta Tau International 23rd International Nursing Research Congress in Brisbane, Australia.
Women Investing in Nebraska awarded the UNMC College of Nursing a $77,425 grant to help improve health care services for elderly in rural areas around Kearney. The grant will be used to conduct comprehensive geriatric assessments through the college’s Mobile Nurse Managed Center. It also will provide training for primary care physicians and nurse practitioners in training.
