Rural high school students learn about health professions during visit to UNMC

The University of Nebraska Medical Center Student Association for Rural Health, made up of students from rural areas studying at UNMC, held its 16th annual Career Day on Sept. 18. The event is designed to introduce students with an interest in health careers to the multitude of professions available in the health sciences.

Two hundred-two students from 80 towns and 42 rural schools learned about opportunities in behavioral health, clinical laboratory science, dentistry, medical nutrition, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant, public health, and radiation sciences.  The students attended three 30-minute interactive sessions of their choosing with various health professionals.

The SARH Career Day is one of many UNMC efforts to assist in growing its own future health professionals for Nebraska. Sponsors of the event included the Student Association for Rural Health, the Rural Health Education Network and the Nebraska Area Health Education Center program.
