Twenty-eight students from nine different undergraduate and community college programs have joined the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) program this summer.

The program was created to:

  • Expose students to serious biomedical research;
  • Build a statewide biomedical research infrastructure between undergraduate and graduate institutions; and
  • Strengthen each undergraduate institution’s infrastructure and increase its capacity to conduct cutting-edge biomedical and behavioral research.

Below, we get to know more about INBRE scholar Kelsey Stark.

  • Name: Kelsey Stark
  • Hometown: Gretna
  • University: Doane College

Science is important to me because I know it offers opportunities to help people whether it is through medicine or research.

I’ve always been good at science and it has interested me since I was young, but it was not until my senior year of high school and going into my freshman year of college that I realized I wanted to go into the field and make it my chosen career.

The INBRE program is an excellent opportunity to get experience in biomedical research. I have always asked many questions and am constantly wondering why some process occurs or why a certain outcome was achieved. I know asking lots of questions is a good thing in research and hopefully with successful results I can answer some of my own questions and learn why things happen the way they do.
