UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center combined to collect 1,863 pounds of food to benefit the Food Bank for the Heartland.
Kacie Gerard presents a check to Brian Barks of the Food Bank for the Heartland. The money collected for the check came from the sale of food bank stickers during the recent campus food drive. The purchase of a sticker allowed an employee to wear blue jeans to work for a day. |
The drive — which was organized by the Nurses’ Week Committee and others — ran April 16 through May 4 due to spring being the greatest time of need at the Food Bank of the Heartland. In previous years, UNMC’s food drive was in November.
Highlights of the drive included:
- The drive’s kickoff on April 13 with the “Hustle for Hunger” walk/run. More than 45 UNMC employees and students participated in this event; and
- A donation of $938 to the food bank raised from the sale of food bank stickers that employees could purchase for $1 to be able to have “jean days” during the food drive.
The following UNMC employees helped sell stickers during this time (UNMC even sold stickers all the way in Scottsbluff):
- Margaret Boyce — Administration Building;
- Shawn Smith — College of Public Health;
- Kim Ager — Bennett Hall;
- Melanie Stewart — Durham Research Center;
- Barb Glover — Munroe-Meyer Institute;
- Judy Houfek — Sorrell Center; and
- Ana Lara-Ramirez — College of Nursing.
