Tips to get more steps

As we prepared for the UNMC Walks to the Olympics Challenge in the PR office, our brand manager Dawn Nevarez shared the following tips with us, which she learned in previous step challenges:

  • Get a real pedometer — don’t use your phone. Unless you have it hanging around your neck, you’ll miss hundreds, maybe thousands of steps.
  • Put your pedometer on the minute you step out of bed. I average 1,500 steps before I walk out the door in the morning.
  • You’ll be amazed how many steps you get while cooking dinner and cleaning up. Where is your phone while you’re cooking? On the counter missing all those steps.
  • Take the stairs. But if you must take an elevator — walk around while you wait. You can get more than 100 steps while you wait!
