Registration is open for a training program designed to improve the oral communication skills of post docs.
The program — which teaches the essential elements of effective public speaking and includes adaptations for multicultural situations — will be held each Thursday in June from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Durham Research Center, Room 1004.
What you’ll learn
At the end of the training program, participants will be able to demonstrate improvement in public speaking skills, specifically:
- Knowledge of the basic principles of public speaking in a Western culture;
- The steps in the speechmaking process, including research, preparation and practice;
- How to adapt speech styles to the expectations of a Euro-American audience;
- How to develop and deliver a professional presentation;
- The effective use of visual aids to support spoken language;
- Ways to reduce or eliminate speech anxiety; and
- How to handle audience questions, during or after the speech.
Between each session participants are expected to view video recordings and complete homework assignments for the next class. An agenda will be available before the course begins.
Instructor and more information
The seminars will be facilitated by Peg Peterson, a public speaking instructor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and is open to all UNMC post docs. Both native and nonnative English speakers are strongly encouraged to participate.
