Incoming UNMC High School Alliance students registered for fall classes on Monday evening in the Sorrell Center. This fall, 55 students from high schools around the Omaha area will attend college-level classes at UNMC in preparation for health careers. This is the third year alliance students will be on campus.
The UNMC Department of Cellular and Integrative Physiology had a huge presence at the recent American Physiological Society’s (APS) 125th Anniversary Meeting in San Diego. Department students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty made 26 presentations, including five oral presentations and 21-poster presentations. The following individuals were recognized for their outstanding work:
- Chairman Irving H. Zucker, Ph.D., gave the Carl Ludwig Distinguished Lecture of the APS Neural Control & Autonomic Regulation Section. The recipient is chosen by the section as a representative of the best within the discipline.
- Grad student Erin Rosenbaugh received the Graduate Student Award from the Neural Control and Autonomic Regulation Section of the APS.
- Professor Harold Schultz, Ph.D., was elected chairman of the Neural Control and Autonomic Regulation (NCAR) Section of the APS for a three-year term.
- The Nebraska Physiological Society Chapter received a $2,000 grant from the APS for a high school student outreach program.
- Professor Pamela Carmines, Ph.D., was elected to the APS 13-member governing body.
- Graduate research assistant Debra Irsik received the Caroline tum Suden/Frances Hellebrandt Professional Opportunity Awards and the APS/NIDDK Minority Travel Fellowship.
- Graduate research assistant Ryan Cornelius was a finalist for the APS Renal Award of Excellence.
