Spring Fling paper airplane contest rules

Below are the rules for Tuesday’s paper airplane contest, which will be held as part of Spring Fling.

Here are some instructions on how to make the Sabertooth paper airplane. Here’s another video of it in flight. Impressive.

  • Each competitor builds one paper airplane using only the materials provided on the table.
  • The paper airplane should be designed to fly as far as possible.
  • Each competitor throws his or her paper airplane while the judges record distances in feet and inches. All distances must be measured from the starting line to the point where the plane first touches the ground — not to the final resting place if it slides. Each competitor has two chances to get his or her best distance.

Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 competitors with the longest distances recorded.

Spring Fling runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the paper airplane contest will be held at the base of the campus art feature on the east side of the Ruth and Bill Scott Student Plaza green space. The contest will run throughout the event.

Spring Fling also will feature:

  • A fire-dancing performance by UNMC’s own Ken Hill at noon in the Student Plaza;
  • Hamburgers, grilled chicken, hot dogs or veggie burgers for sale on site from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The $5 meals also include bottled water and a choice of chips or whole fruit;
  • UNMC cookies, which will be distributed free while they last by UNMC’s Human Resources and Public Relations staff; and
  • UNMC apparel and merchandise onsite from the UNMC Bookstore including a variety of T-shirts ($7 each or two for $12), UNMC Nike bags ($10), UNMC Polo shirts ($15) and UNMC Camelbak waterbottles ($12).

Don’t forget to visit the Sorrell Center C-store all-day for appreciation deals such as $1 coffees/cappuccinos of any size.
