A total of 114 senior medical students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha received their residency assignments today during a Match Day ceremony held on campus. A residency is a training program for newly graduated medical students in the medical area of their choice. Residencies range in length from three to six years.
Forty-three percent of UNMC students are staying in Nebraska for their training, and 59 percent of UNMC students matched in primary care, which includes family medicine, internal medicine, internal medicine/pediatrics, pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology.
Students are matched through a computer program to align their preferences for residency programs in order to fill the thousands of training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals.
According to the National Resident Matching Program (NMRP) nearly 16,000 U.S. medical students learned today where they will spend the next three to seven years in residency training. Of the applicants who matched, 81.6 percent of U.S. seniors and 81.5 percent of independent applicants matched to one of their top three choices. More than 56 percent of U.S. seniors and approximately 49 percent of independent applicants matched to their first choice.
The UNMC students, slated to graduate May 5, are listed by hometown, name, specialty and residency assignment.
