University projects receive first-round approval

The legislature has given first-round approval to the appropriations committee’s budget bill, which includes funding for three projects in the University of Nebraska’s “Building a Healthier Nebraska” initiative.

The Nebraska Legislature Appropriations Committee gave first-round approval to provide UNMC $50 million to construct a research tower as part of a proposed comprehensive cancer center.

The appropriations committee advanced its budget bill to the legislative floor earlier this week, where it received first round approval on a 43-0 vote. The committee has recommended a $7.2 billion budget for 2011-2013, including leaving $341 million in the cash reserve.

“We are very appreciative of the legislature’s initial support of this package, and we want to recognize the extent of the statewide support for these projects,” said Bob Bartee, vice chancellor for External Affairs at UNMC. “Expressing this support to state senators throughout the session will be very important to this initiative’s success.”

Where things stand now

The legislature has given first-round approval of state funding at the level of:

• $15 million for the Kearney-based nursing and allied health project;
  
• $50 million for the cancer research tower in Omaha; and
  
• $50 million for the Veterinary Diagnostic Center in Lincoln.

The university projects have the potential to grow Nebraska’s economy, meet workforce needs and improve the health and well-being of people across the state, NU leaders said. Legislators soon will begin the second round of debate on LB 968.
