Pandemic influenza is topic of Oct. 4 Science Cafe in Omaha

Pandemic influenza is the topic of the next Science Cafe, Oct. 4, at 6:30 p.m. at The Sydney, 5918 Maple St. Attendees will hear from Marvin Bittner, M.D., associate professor of internal medicine, medical microbiology, and immunology at Creighton University. Dr. Bittner will discuss the hype surrounding the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic.

A hospital epidemiologist, Dr. Bittner will delve into the lessons learned from the 2009 pandemic, what surprises came out of it and why a new vaccine for the elderly generated debate.

This special Science Cafe event is presented in conjunction with the University of Chicago Alumni Club of Omaha-Lincoln.

Science Cafe is a free educational event sponsored by the University of Nebraska Medical Center and other groups to increase the population’s science literacy. Hosted by UNMC, Bio Nebraska and the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures, Science Cafes are held the first Tuesday of each month in Omaha and one Thursday every other month in Lincoln.
