As one of the oldest and resplendent cultures in the world, India has rich and varied languages with equally diverse cuisine and dress.

The annual Rhythms of India/Bharat Mela event will be held on Sunday, Oct. 2 at UNMC. |
This year, the event — cosponsored by UNMC and the Indian Association of Nebraska — will be held in the Sorrell Center’s Truhlsen Campus Events Center.
“It is an opportunity for people to come and discover Indian without having to travel to India,” said Chandra Are, M.D., associate professor of surgical oncology and president of the India Association of Nebraska. “We will showcase Indian history, culture and tradition combined with dance and food in a fun family-style event.”
What: Rhythms of India/Bharat Mela — is designed to highlight the various aspects of the Indian culture. The event will feature:
- A quiz;
- History competition;
- Food vendors serving Indian food;
- Displays from various states of India with their unique arts/crafts/dress; and
- A cultural bonanza with traditional Indian dance and Bollywood.
When: 2-10 p.m.
Cost:
- $10 for adults;
- $25 for a family of four; and/or
- $5 for people under 18 years old.
The event is open to the public.
Who benefits: Money raised from the event will fund multiple charitable events that the India Association of Nebraska has been undertaking for several years. They include scholarships to UNO, Creighton University, donation to Blind Foundation, emergency food shelters and to organizations that promote education of girls in India.
In addition, this year the funds will be allotted to a new scholarship to be given to UNMC.
