A note about UNMC’s new web filtering system

ITS has started to implement Symantec Web Filtering to proactively protect users’ computers and the network from malicious code and inappropriate content on the internet.

Designed to keep you in “safe neighborhoods,” the product blocks websites that are known to contain viruses, other malware and those sites used for phishing attacks.

This will help reduce many typical workstation issues caused by viruses and spyware. The product also will block sites that are deemed inappropriate, which includes:

• Pornography;
  
• Hate sites;
  
• Peer-to-peer; and
  
• Anonymous proxy servers.

No software has to be installed on computers and the product will not adversely affect browsing response times.

If a site you are going to is blocked, it will present a page telling you why it is blocked. Requests to have sites unblocked will require review and approval by ITS Security before they are unblocked.
