More about the marathon

Read a Lincoln Journal Star story about Sunday’s marathon.

That means Dr. Cummings moved at about a six-minute mile pace for the whole race. (EDITOR’S NOTE: That’s pretty quick.)

Below, the marathon champ talks with UNMC Today about the race and running in general.

How do you work your training into your schedule as a resident?

Running has been a part of my life for a long time. As I’ve become increasingly busy over the years, I’ve had to become more flexible with when I run. It just happens whenever I can fit it into the day. Running is a completely different world for me, and when I come back I’m ready to deal with real life and work again. Of course, no matter what, there’s a certain time commitment involved.

How many marathons have you run?

Lincoln was my seventh marathon. I’ve done Boston twice, “Grandma’s Marathon” in Duluth, Minn., three times and Lakeshore in Milwaukee once.

What’s your best time ever?

My time in Lincoln was my best.

How did you get into marathons?

I ran cross country and track in college. I didn’t race at all for a few years after undergrad; however, I really focused on increasing my mileage during that time — then I decided to run a marathon after my first year of medical school.

Do you plan to run another marathon?

Yes. Maybe New York this year or Boston in the spring. I’ll see what happens and what my schedule is like. I’m never really sure what will work out, but something always does.

What’s your overall goal in terms of marathon running?

I want to keep getting faster and have fun while I’m at it.
