UNMC History 101 – The Omaha Medical College stones

picture disc.

The Omaha Medical College stones above the College of Medicine stained-class window actually hung above the Omaha Medical College door at its actual location at 12th and Pacific streets.
(Editor’s note: On the first Tuesday of each month, UNMC Today will feature an item on the medical center’s history.)

Have you ever noticed the Omaha Medical College blocks in the hallway between Wittson Hall and University Tower?

Did you know that the blocks originally hung over the door of the Omaha Medical College building? The OMC building was at the corner 12th and Pacific streets from 1886 until the 1930s when it was demolished. The site is now home to Omaha’s main post office.

The Omaha Medical College became the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1902.

In the 1980s, the OMC stones were installed in the hallway in recognition of the College of Medicine’s 100th Anniversary.

Photos and story provided by Robert Wigton, M.D., associate dean of the College of Medicine, and John Schleicher of the McGoogan Library of Medicine.

After working here for 30 years, I find the UNMC history fascinating. I think Dr Wigton / Public Relations should be working on compiling a book of all the interesting facts and make it available for purchase.
