Shantaram Joshi, Ph.D., professor in the department of genetics, cell biology and anatomy in the College of Medicine, is among four UNMC faculty members who will receive Outstanding Teaching Awards at the April 26 Annual Faculty meeting.
Below, Dr. Joshi reflects on what it means to be a teacher.

What are the greatest rewards of being a teacher?
Interacting with students from a variety of backgrounds that have diverse viewpoints. I am always amazed at the probing questions students come up with and love constantly updating my knowledge base to make sure I can answer their questions.
Describe a moment in your career when you realized you had picked the right occupation.
I was teaching remedial medical histology for the first time and, not only got to help the students understand major concepts, but regain confidence in their ability to conquer difficult subjects. The students scored beyond their expectations on the exam. It was incredibly rewarding to know I had helped them overcome academic and personal hurdles.
What are the biggest challenges you face as a teacher?
Every student has a different way of learning. As a professor, I want to facilitate this learning process. In this digital era, it can be challenging to design lectures that will be conducive to every learning style.
How do you know when you’ve been successful as a teacher?
If I’m able to help students who are struggling in my course understand the information better and make them feel proud of everything they have learned. I also know I’m successful when I receive a letter or e-mail from a graduate conveying their gratitude for all that I taught them.
List three things few people know about you.
- I was a volunteer priest at the Hindu Temple in Omaha for more than 10 years and provided service to the congregation on weekends.
- I played sports during my postgraduate education.
- When I came to the United States, a friend gave me free tickets to a concert (my first concert mind you) and I went just for the experience. Little did I know I was hearing a great American legend, Frank Sinatra.
