January
- UNMC sends the first of five teams of health care volunteers to help in Haiti, which was struck by a massive earthquake.
February
- Alexander “Sasha” Kabanov, Ph.D., Parke-Davis Professor in Pharmaceutics and director of the Center for Drug Delivery and Nanomedicine, is named UNMC’s fourth Scientist Laureate.
- UNMC employees participate in the Push-ups for Haiti event.
- John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D.,, announces that he will step down as dean of the College of Medicine. Rod Markin, M.D., Ph.D., is later named interim dean and a national search begins for a new dean.
April
- The University of Nebraska Board of Regents approves the creation of the Center for Global Health and Development (CGHAD) in the College of Public Health.
- UNMC receives $8 million in federal stimulus funds for renovation of the Eppley Cancer Institute building.
June
- The Cattlemen’s Ball in Kearney raises $1 million for cancer research.
July
- UNMC opens the Home Instead Center for Successful Aging.
- UNMC research funding tops $115 million.
August
- The J. Paul and Eleanor McIntosh College of Nursing in Norfolk, which houses a UNMC College of Nursing Division, opens.
- The first High School Alliance class starts at UNMC.
October
- Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., is named to the National Health Care Workforce Commission (NHCWC), which will help advise the president, Congress and other government officials on workforce issues related to health care reform.
- UNMC opens the Center for Nursing Science on the Omaha campus.
- Condoleezza Rice speaks at the sixth Ambassador of Hope Gala, which raised $1 million for research at the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center.
- Virginia Tilden, D.N.Sc., dean of the College of Nursing for the past seven years, announces that she will retire in June 2011.
December
- UNMC breaks ground on the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute.
- Tom Rosenquist, Ph.D., announces he will step down as vice chancellor for research in 2011.
- UNMC hosts its first Spirit Week and Spirit Challenge.
